Face Assistant

Name the people in your photographs, on your own Mac

Beta Version 0.3.7 · Plugin · macOS

Finds faces in the photographs you select, learns who people are only from the faces you confirm, and applies the person keywords you already use — on your own Mac, with no cloud service, and nothing written until you press apply.

How it works

One menu item, Library > Plug-in Extras > Face Assistant…, opens a console that stays beside the Library and follows your selection. From there you find faces in the selected photographs, import the person keywords your catalog already carries as a starting point, review unnamed faces — one known person at a time, ranked by resemblance, or in similarity groups you can name together — and apply the confirmed names.

  • No selection, no scan. There is no background pass over the whole catalog.
  • It learns only from faces you confirm. A group action applies to exactly the faces ticked when you press it, and the last one can be undone.
  • Names are compared sensibly. Accents and case are folded for Latin letters, so Zoe and Zoë are one person — but not for Cyrillic, where the mark is what separates two different letters.
  • A read-only keyword check reports person keywords that look like duplicates of each other.

Your keywords stay yours

Instead of

Inventing its own names and hierarchy. It works with the person keywords already in Lightroom’s Keyword List, and never creates, renames or deletes one. Names reach your photographs only when you press Apply confirmed names, and only as keywords you chose. Taking a wrongly imported name off a photograph is a separate action that asks first.

Where the data lives

Everything runs on your Mac. The plugin makes no network requests: the model download buttons open the model pages in your browser, and you place the files yourself. The people it knows and their face data are kept in a local database in your user Library folder, shared across your catalogs, with backups beside it. That database holds face embeddings — biometric data about the people in your photographs — so treat an export of it as carefully as the photographs themselves.

Status, stated plainly

Version 0.3 is an early release for Lightroom Classic 15 and later, on Apple Silicon Macs only, running on the CPU, and it has been tested in Lightroom Classic on a Mac. Its matching thresholds have not been measured against a benchmark set, so treat every proposed match as a suggestion to review. It is not yet signed or notarised.

Licensing

The plugin is licensed under Apache 2.0. No model weights are included: the default models are published under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licences, and an optional alternative backend uses weights released for non-commercial research only, which you would be bound by if you chose it.
